Holding on to Hope

September is not only Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it is also NICU Awareness Month—a time to recognize the tiniest warriors, their families, and the incredible teams who fight alongside them.

As a fellow NICU parent, I know firsthand that the journey is filled with emotions most people can’t fully imagine—fear, exhaustion, uncertainty, but also resilience, love, and hope.

Walking into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the first time feels like stepping into another world: the soft beeps of monitors, the hum of machines, the rows of isolettes. You want nothing more than to scoop your baby into your arms and take them home, yet instead, you find yourself learning a new language of oxygen levels, feeding tubes, and growth charts.

It’s overwhelming, but it’s also a place where miracles happen every single day.

           To the NICU Parents

If you are in the thick of it right now, I want you to hear this: you are not alone.

Your strength is showing up each day, even when you’re running on empty. Your love is felt with every gentle touch, every whispered word, every moment spent by your baby’s side. You are doing enough—even when it doesn’t feel like it.

It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to feel afraid. It’s okay to lean on others. The NICU journey is not one anyone chooses, but it’s one that reveals just how deep a parent’s love truly runs.

How We Can All Support NICU Families

Offer presence, not pressure. Sometimes, just being there to listen makes all the difference.

Celebrate the small victories. Every ounce gained, every tube removed, every milestone reached is worth cheering for.

Spread awareness. Share stories, wear NICU awareness colors, or support organizations that provide resources to families.

Show grace. NICU parents often live in survival mode—your patience and understanding matter.

To all the parents, babies, and caregivers touched by the NICU—we see you. We honor your fight, your strength, and your unwavering love.

This September, let’s not only raise awareness but also wrap our NICU families in compassion and community. Whether your baby is still in the NICU, has graduated, or is forever in your heart—know this: you and your story matter.

You are ENOUGH, exactly as you are.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to shed light on a subject that is too often left in the shadows. At Cookies Refuge, Inc., we believe in the power of community, compassion, and conversation to bring hope to those who may be struggling.

This month, we want to remind you of one simple truth:

✨ You are enough. Exactly as you are.

Your presence matters. Your story matters. The world is brighter because you are in it.

World Suicide Prevention Day – September 10th

On September 10th, people across the globe recognize World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a day dedicated to raising awareness, breaking stigma, and spreading the message that suicide is preventable. It’s also a reminder that small acts of kindness, listening without judgment, and offering support can truly save lives.

           How You Can Get Involved

Everyone has the power to make a difference. Here are a few ways you can take action this month:

Start the conversation. Check in with a friend, a family member, or even a coworker. Sometimes just asking, “How are you really doing?” can open the door to healing.

Share resources. Post the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline on your social media or in your community. Remind others that help is available 24/7.

Educate yourself. Learn about the warning signs of suicide and ways to support someone in crisis. Knowledge is a powerful tool in prevention.

Show kindness. Simple acts—like offering a smile, sending a text, or lending a listening ear—can make a huge impact.

Get involved in events. Participate in local walks, awareness campaigns, or online events that support mental health and suicide prevention.

To anyone who feels unseen, unheard, or unloved—we see you. We hear you. You are deeply valued. No matter where you are in your journey, remember: you are enough, and you are never alone.

Let’s come together this September and beyond to spread knowledge, share hope, and remind one another of the truth we all need to hear:

As June rolls in, we are not just greeted by the warmth of summer, but also by the vibrant celebration of Pride Month. This month is dedicated to honoring and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community, a time for everyone to come together in solidarity, love, and acceptance. It’s a reminder that our differences make us beautifully diverse and that kindness is an essential ingredient in fostering a more inclusive world.

The Power of Love and Acceptance

Pride Month serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of love—love for ourselves, love for our community, and love for those who may be different from us. It’s a time to reflect on the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, who have fought tirelessly for equal rights, recognition, and acceptance in a world that has often been unkind. Their journey inspires us all to embrace our true selves and to encourage others to do the same.

When we choose kindness, we choose to stand up against prejudice and discrimination. We choose to celebrate authenticity and to uplift those around us. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, love has the power to unite us all. It encourages empathy, understanding, and connection—qualities that enrich our lives and our communities.

           Embracing Diversity

Diversity is the tapestry that colors our human experience. Each thread represents unique stories, backgrounds, and identities that add depth and richness to our society. Pride Month is an invitation to recognize and honor this diversity. Whether you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community or stand as an ally, your voice matters. You play a part in fostering an environment where everyone can express themselves freely and authentically.

Let’s take this opportunity to educate ourselves—read books, listen to experiences, attend local Pride events, and support LGBTQ+ organizations. The more we understand each other, the better equipped we are to spread love and kindness, fostering a sense of belonging for all.

           The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Imagine a world where kindness is at the forefront of our interactions. A simple act of kindness—offering a listening ear, speaking out against injustice, or sharing words of encouragement—can create ripples of change. Each act of love, no matter how small, contributes to a larger movement of acceptance and support.

As we celebrate Pride Month, let’s make a commitment to be intentional about our words and actions. Support the LGBTQ+ businesses in your community, advocate for equitable policies, and amplify LGBTQ+ voices that deserve to be heard. Be an ally not just during June, but throughout the entire year.

           A Call to Embrace Love

As we embrace this month of Pride, let’s celebrate the courage of those who dare to live authentically. Let’s create a space where everyone feels safe, seen, and valued. Remember, love knows no bounds; it transcends identities, orientations, and backgrounds.

This June, let’s choose to be beacons of love and kindness in our everyday lives. Let’s cultivate understanding and acceptance, empowering those around us to be their true selves. Together, as a unified front, we can build a world filled with compassion, support, and endless love.

In honor of Pride Month, let's not only wear our colors proudly but also carry the message of love in our hearts, spreading kindness wherever we go. Love wins, and in that victory, we all thrive. Happy Pride Month! ✨

A Call to Action for Men's Mental Health Awareness

As I reflect on my journey as a Black woman navigating the complexities of life, there's one memory that stands out vividly—my father’s smile, warm and inviting, a reminder of the joy he brought into our lives. But that smile masked a silent struggle, one that ultimately led to his tragic decision to end his own life when I was just a child. This experience has profoundly shaped my understanding of mental health, especially within the Black community, particularly regarding our men.

June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, and I want to take this opportunity to speak directly to the men in our lives. You, the brothers, fathers, uncles, sons, and friends—your mental health matters, and your well-being should never be sidelined or overlooked.

Growing up without my father, I often pondered the invisible battles he faced. I realized that many men, particularly men of color, carry similar burdens—the weight of expectations, societal stereotypes, and the stigma that surrounds mental health. We live in a world that often encourages men to be strong, stoic, and self-reliant. But this façade can be suffocating. It stifles conversations, discourages vulnerability, and often leads to isolation when what is needed most is connection and understanding.

           Breaking the Stigma

Too often, men suffer in silence. It’s time to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health in our communities. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a courageous act of self-care. You have the right to express what you feel without fear of judgment or ridicule. Your voice matters, and it deserves to be heard.

Let us create spaces where men can share their struggles openly—without the fear of being dismissed or misunderstood. Initiate conversations with your friends, family, or community groups. When one person speaks up, it encourages others to do the same. Together, we can foster an environment where mental health is prioritized, and vulnerability is celebrated.

           Encouraging Self-Care

Self-care is essential. It’s not merely about taking time off work or indulging in a hobby; it’s about nurturing your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Embrace activities that bring you joy—whether that’s exercising, exploring creativity through art, or spending quality time with loved ones. Prioritize your well-being as you navigate life’s challenges. Remember, taking care of yourself allows you to show up for others in the way they need you.

           Reaching Out for Help

If you are struggling, please know that it’s okay to seek help. Whether through therapy, support groups, or talking to trusted friends and family, reaching out is a powerful step towards healing. Many organizations and resources cater specifically to Black men navigating mental health challenges. Use them. Lean on your community.

My father’s story is a painful reminder of the importance of addressing mental health openly. In honoring his memory, I urge you to break the cycle of silence. Let us advocate for one another and build a legacy of resilience, bravery, and healing.

           A Call to Action

This Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, I encourage you—men of color and beyond—to remember that you are loved, you are valued, and you are worthy. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Speak up. Reach out. You are not alone in this journey. Together, we can make a difference, not just for ourselves but for future generations.

Let us break the silence, celebrate vulnerability, and create a culture of healing and support. We owe it to ourselves, to each other, and to those we love.

In unity and strength, let’s lift each other up, champion our mental health, and forge a brighter future together.

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a crucial time to shine a light on mental health issues and foster discussions around self-care and communal support, especially in urban communities. The hustle and bustle of city life often means individuals are surrounded by people yet can still feel isolated, overwhelmed, or stressed. Acknowledging mental health, sharing experiences, and fostering community can play a vital role in healing and well-being.

Urban environments can be both exhilarating and challenging. Although they provide numerous resources, the high cost of living, social pressures, and fast-paced lifestyles can lead to significant emotional stress. In such contexts, community becomes essential. A supportive community can help individuals feel valued, understood, and less alone in their struggles.

Self-care is individual, but in urban settings, it often requires a bit more creativity. Here are some recommendations tailored to the unique aspects of city life:

           •

           Explore Local Parks:

Nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. Schedule time to visit nearby parks or green spaces, even if it’s just for a short walk or to read a book outdoors.

           •

           Engage in Community Activities:

Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental well-being—especially within our urban communities. By fostering connection, embracing diversity, and supporting one another, we can collectively work towards healing and resilience. Remember, seeking help or sharing experiences is not a sign of weakness but rather a courageous step towards wellness. Let’s continue the conversation this May and beyond, ensuring that mental health remains a priority for all.

Understanding Domestic Violence: A Call for Awareness and Action

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the impact of domestic violence in our communities and to advocate for those affected by it. Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that transcends age, gender, socioeconomic status, and cultural background. It affects millions of individuals and families, often leaving deep emotional and physical scars that can last a lifetime.

Domestic violence is more than just physical abuse; it can encompass emotional, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse. Victims may experience manipulation, intimidation, and control, which can lead to feelings of isolation and helplessness. It is crucial to recognize that anyone can be a victim, and abusers can come from any walk of life. The stigma surrounding domestic violence often prevents individuals from speaking out, leading to a cycle of silence that can be incredibly damaging.

During this month, we must acknowledge the prevalence of domestic violence and the importance of creating a supportive environment for survivors. Many individuals feel trapped in their situations, fearing not only for their safety but also for their futures and the well-being of their children. It is vital to foster a culture of understanding and empathy, where victims feel empowered to seek help and where bystanders are encouraged to intervene safely.

Awareness is the first step toward change. We can educate ourselves and others about the signs of domestic violence, which may include unexplained injuries, changes in behavior, or withdrawal from friends and family. By recognizing these signs, we can offer support to those who may be suffering in silence. It is also essential to understand the resources available to victims, such as hotlines, shelters, and counseling services that provide critical support and safety.

As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let us come together as a community to break the silence surrounding this issue. We can advocate for policy changes that protect victims and hold abusers accountable. We can support local organizations that work tirelessly to provide services for survivors. Most importantly, we can listen without judgment and offer compassion to those who bravely share their stories.

Every individual deserves to live free from fear and violence. By raising awareness and taking action, we can contribute to a society where everyone feels safe and supported. Let us stand in solidarity with survivors and commit to creating a world where domestic violence is no longer tolerated. Together, we can make a difference—one conversation, one act of kindness, and one step toward change at a time.

As September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I find it crucial to share my heart and experiences with a topic that is deeply personal to me before the month ends. Having lost multiple loved ones to suicide, the pain and confusion that accompany such losses are etched into my soul. The most significant loss for me was that of my father. His passing was not just a profound personal tragedy; it was the moment that propelled me into the world of mental health advocacy. It made me acutely aware of the struggles many face, often silently, and ignited a passion in me to help those who feel lost in their darkest moments.

Suicide rates among people of color and individuals living in urban neighborhoods are alarmingly high. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black youth aged 10 to 19 have seen an increase in suicide rates, which underscores the urgent need for targeted mental health resources and outreach within communities that often remain underserved. Additionally, studies show that urban environments, with their unique stressors, can contribute to heightened rates of mental health issues, leading to increased risk of suicide. These statistics are not just numbers; they represent lives lost and families shattered.

Recognizing the warning signs of someone who may be struggling is essential. These can include changes in behavior, withdrawal from loved ones, a decline in performance at work or school, or expressions of hopelessness. If you notice these signs in yourself or someone you care about, it’s vital to act. Reach out, listen, and encourage them to seek help.

There are numerous resources available for those in crisis. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers 24/7 support at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255), and the Crisis Text Line provides immediate assistance via text at 741741. Local mental health clinics, community organizations, and online therapy platforms can also offer support tailored to individual needs, and if you're here reading this, you've already accessed one of those resources.

To anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide, I want you to know that you are not alone in your grief. The journey of healing is long and often filled with complex emotions, but it is important to remember that seeking support is a sign of strength. For those who have contemplated or attempted suicide, your life matters. You are valued, and there is help available. Please reach out to someone you trust or a mental health professional. There is hope, even when it feels like darkness is all around.

As we observe this month dedicated to awareness and prevention, let us commit to opening our hearts, listening to one another, and fostering a culture of compassion and understanding. Together, we can create a world where every individual feels seen, heard, and supported.

July Is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

As a Black woman, the importance of Minority Mental Health Awareness Month hits close to home for me. The struggles and challenges that we face as Black women often go unnoticed and unaddressed, leading to a greater need for us to prioritize our mental health and well-being. In today's political climate, where systemic racism, discrimination, and social injustice are constantly at the forefront, it is more important than ever for us to practice self-care and advocate for our mental health.

Being a Black woman in today's society comes with its own set of unique stressors and traumas. From microaggressions in the workplace to the constant fear of violence and discrimination in our communities, the weight of these experiences can take a toll on our mental health. The recent rise in racial tensions and acts of violence against Black individuals only adds to the anxiety and trauma that many of us are already carrying.

In the face of these challenges, practicing self-care becomes essential for our survival and resilience. Taking the time to prioritize our mental health, whether through therapy, meditation, or simply setting boundaries and practicing self-compassion, can help us navigate the complexities of our experiences and find moments of peace and healing.

In today's political climate, where the fight for racial justice is more urgent than ever, it is crucial for us as Black women to prioritize our own well-being as we continue to advocate for change. Our mental health is not a luxury, but a necessity for our survival and our ability to show up as our full, empowered selves in the fight for justice and equality.

As we observe Minority Mental Health Awareness Month this July, let us remember the importance of self-care and mental health support for Black women. Let us uplift and support each other as we navigate the challenges of our experiences, and work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all Black individuals to prioritize their mental health and well-being.

           Hey Cousins!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is a time to bring attention to the importance of taking care of our mental health. This is especially crucial for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities, who often face unique challenges and barriers when it comes to accessing mental health care.

Mental health disparities are a pressing issue within BIPOC communities, with studies showing that individuals from these communities are less likely to receive mental health treatment and more likely to experience negative outcomes. Factors such as systemic racism, discrimination, and cultural stigma can all contribute to these disparities, making it even more important for us to prioritize our mental well-being.

Taking care of our mental health is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength and self-awareness. It is essential to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health and to seek help when needed. Whether it be through therapy, support groups, or self-care practices, there are many resources available to help us on our mental health journey.

As we navigate the challenges of daily life, let us remember to prioritize our mental well-being and take the time to check in with ourselves and our loved ones. By breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and building a supportive community, we can create a more inclusive and understanding environment for all.

Let us use this month to raise awareness, start conversations, and advocate for better mental health resources for BIPOC communities. Together, we can work towards a future where mental health care is accessible and equitable for all.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

           With love and solidarity,
